Be Thankful

Thanksgiving offers a chance to reflect on our lives and express gratitude for what we possess. My life has had its share of highs and lows, but I am still fortunate. My situation is better than that of many people around the globe. There’s endless potential for me to improve as a man, husband, brother, son, uncle, and human being.

I will use my platform and advantages to support and defend the marginalized. My upbringing was in the foster care system. I was fortunate to be adopted. Twenty years ago, I reconnected with my biological family. I’ve accomplished a lot. I understand many people are still struggling. In Gaza, some children will never get to celebrate another holiday with their loved ones. A veteran without a home is sleeping under a Chicago viaduct tonight. Someone won’t eat dinner tonight because they can’t afford food. My vision is a world where no one lacks basic needs.

A world obsessed with self-centeredness has pushed compassion and humility to the sidelines. Think about the things you should appreciate in your life. It can provide you with a fresh perspective. I’m passionate about creating a better world for everyone and enjoy what I have.

Here are some reasons to be thankful:

Health: It’s wonderful to wake up every day and live without major health troubles. As a man in his 40s, it’s definitely becoming more important.

Loving family and friends: We find joy and support in strong relationships with those we care about. Recently, I had the pleasure of spending time with family members I hadn’t seen in years. As we age, some friends and family won’t be with us. Don’t let precious opportunities to connect slip away. This year has been all about strengthening relationships with old friends and family.

A safe and comfortable home: It’s essential for our well-being to have a place where we can rest and relax. I am a millennial homeowner, and that’s an achievement in itself. Thanks VA Home Loan!

The beauty of nature: Nature, encompassing forests, mountain peaks, and beaches, offers peace and inspiration. My adventures have taken me from ice climbing in the upper Midwest to rafting iconic North and Central American rivers to working out in my neighborhood’s city park.

The opportunity to learn and grow: Education and personal development help us see the world in new ways. There’s always more to learn, no matter how old you are. That’s part of being an evolved man.

The ability to help others: Feeling fulfilled comes from positively impacting the lives of others. As a social worker, I’ve been lucky to help individuals discover their purpose or explore new paths of growth.

Access to food and water are essential things many people don’t think twice about. I’m grateful for a full fridge and clean running water (Well, sometimes it doesn’t run in ATL), knowing many in the U.S. and in other parts of the world struggle with food insecurity and don’t have clean water.

Technology: Tools that foster connection and enhance convenience. My love for video games was rekindled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now social media has some BIG drawbacks. However, it’s helped me connect with long lost friends and family and get the word out about my Evolving Folks Project website. My brain musings on the Question Culture podcast have been shared with thousands thanks to Twitter (X), Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

The gift of life: Every day presents a new chance for something great. Or a new day to get some much needed break or lazy day. Everyday you wake up is something to be cherished. Dealing with depression in my late teens and 20s makes this reflection particularly impactful.

Small joys bring us joy: Laughter, a good book, a cold glass of beer, a wonderful movie, a kiss from a partner, or my dog’s Mayor affection.

It’s important to remember that gratitude is something you cultivate. Every day, take a moment to appreciate the things, both big and small, that you are grateful for. It can enhance your general well-being and your perspective on life. These are some things that I am thankful for this year, and I hope that those who read this can find something they’re grateful for this holiday season.
