The Evolved Man of the Week: Daniel Ole Sambu

Welcome to the Evolving Folks Project’s “Evolved Man of the Week” profile. Each week, we will highlight an individual who embodies what it means to be an evolved person, whether famous or non-famous. This week’s honor goes to the former Program Coordinator for the Predator Compensation Fund at the Big Life Foundation, the former Deputy Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), and wildlife champion, Daniel Ole Sambu.

Sambu’s impact stemmed from his confidence, rooted in his local roots. Sambu, who grew up near Amboseli, always remembered living with wildlife. People’s first impression of Sambu was often his smile, according to colleagues. Also, the way he listened stood out. His attributes helped him stabilize a program that could have become bogged down. Conversely, the requirements and stresses of the families relying on it influenced and rooted the program in relationships.

His work was about much more than pay and site visits. He spent years working to improve the lives of rangers across Kenya and later became Interim Chairman of the Association of Wildlife Conservancy Rangers. This role suited him well, and the rangers trusted him. He understood the risks they faced and worked to improve their conditions without seeking attention. When the Africa Ranger Congress was first held in Kenya, with about 150 rangers from over 20 African countries, attendees said Lewa’s leadership helped everyone stay focused. He wanted rangers to feel recognized, supported, and connected. He often said that conservation depends on people.

In November 2025, when Kenyan president William Ruto visited the Big Life Foundation stand at the Maa Cultural and Tourism Festival in Amboseli, Ole Sambu, as national coordinator, welcomed him.

Daniel Ole Sambu passed away in December 2025. His loss has affected people all over Kenya, as well as the many lives—both human and animal—he influenced. The communities and organizations he worked with are mourning him deeply. The policy he supported continues. His impact is still visible in how the community Sambu once served deals with complex issues. This perseverance is admirable. It suggests that his careful work may continue, not just because of his memory, but because he inspired others to carry it on. Today, we honor Daniel Ole Sambu as our Evolved Man of the Week.
