The Evolved Woman of the Week: Erin Jackson

Welcome to the Evolving Folks Project’s “Evolved Woman of the Week” profile. Each week, we will highlight an individual who embodies what it means to be an evolved person, famous and non-famous alike. The world needs to know their stories and deeds. Today’s honor goes to Olympic Gold Medalist and USA Flag Bearer for the 2026 Winter Olympics, Erin Jackson.

Erin Jackson’s journey began in Ocala, Florida. She was born on September 19, 1992, to Tracy and Rita Jackson and grew up with one brother. She tried figure skating at age eight and loved it. She attended Shores Christian Academy, Howard Middle School, and Forest High School, joining the Engineering and Manufacturing Institute of Technology magnet program. Excelling in inline speed skating, she won 47 national titles over 15 years. In 2017, she switched to ice skating and, just four months later, qualified for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics—becoming the first Black American woman on the U.S. Olympic speed skating team.

Winning gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics was Erin’s biggest achievement. After slipping at the U.S. trials and nearly missing out, teammate Brittany Bowe gave up her spot so Erin could race. Erin won the 500m, becoming the first Black woman from any country to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Olympics. This triumph propelled her into the next stage of her athletic journey.

After the 2022 season, Erin won consecutive World Cup 500m titles (2023-24, 2024-25) and gold at the Four Continents Championships. At her third Olympics in Milan-Cortina 2026, she carried the U.S. flag and placed 6th in the 1000m and 5th in the 500m, demonstrating determination despite challenges.

From 2023 to 2025, Erin battled ongoing back problems, including three herniated discs. Despite this, she ranked third globally in the 500m and won three World Cup medals. At the 2026 World Sprint Championships, she aimed for the podium. Erin is now considering surgery and already looking toward the 2030 Olympics.

Outside of skating, Erin has many interests. She graduated cum laude in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida. She likes playing pickleball and kickball with friends and has two dogs and two cats. Erin was a finalist on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test and was the only woman contestant to win. She made the Sports Illustrated Fittest 50 list in 2022. Erin hopes to start a scholarship to help others, especially people of color, overcome financial barriers in winter sports. Her journey to Olympic glory is impressive for both its speed and the history she has made. Today, we honor Erin Jackson as our Evolved Woman of the Week.
