‘We’ve seen the worst of humanity,’ Florida school official says as 17 killed in campus shooting

 A former student who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons opened fire at a South Florida high school Wednesday, killing 17 people and wounding at least a dozen others, authorities said.

The suspected gunman, Nikolas Cruz, 19, was quickly arrested “without incident” after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. Cruz had made “disturbing” posts on social media before the attack, Israel said.

Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed as South Africa’s President after Zuma quits

Ramaphosa, 65, the leader of the ruling African National Congress party since December, was the only candidate nominated during a session of the South African Parliament.

Some lawmakers in the National Assembly in Cape Town greeted the announcement on Ramaphosa, though members of the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters party walked out of the chamber in protest during the debate.

But a model-only analysis of the rest of the world—including large regions of South America, Africa and Australia—suggested that these places will likely see similar, if not larger, increases in extreme events, as well.
