Evolved Man of the Week: Michael Brown

Welcome to the Evolving Man Project’s ‘Evolved Man of the Week’ profiles. Each week we will highlight an individual that embodies what it means to be an evolved man, famous and non-famous men alike. The world needs to know their stories and deeds. This week’s honor goes to whiz-kid, and young scholar; Michael Brown.

The 17-year-old Houston native made headlines across the nation by being accepted to twenty different colleges and universities. Among them were Yale, Princeton, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, the University of Texas at Austin and Georgetown. And finally, Harvard to name a few.

He also participates in several extracurricular activities including Lamar’s High School Varsity Debate Team, the Key Club, Young Democrats, Houston Independent School District’s Emerge program and 100 Black Men of Houston, just to name a few.

Michael Brown now has focused on the journey ahead as he narrows down his choices from his final four of Yale, Georgetown, Stanford, and Harvard. He also has earned $260,000 in outside scholarship money in addition to the scholarships offered by the schools. His outstanding achievements have garnered widespread support and praise across social media. Even former President Bill Clinton on Twitter tried to woo Mr. Brown to attend his alma mater, Georgetown University.

Here is Michael Brown in his own words about his recent accomplishments and remaining true to himself despite the new limelight thrust upon him:

“I want to remain humble through all this,” Micheal said… “Out of all the students to achieve similar feats, I am just very happy and very honored to share my story and inspire other students.”

Unfortunately,  Michael’s achievements were not wholeheartedly applauded by all mainstream media outlets. During an April 3 segment on a Fox affiliate in Washington, D.C., co-anchor Holly Morris and contributor Sarah Fraser criticized Brown for applying to 20 schools.

It’s a little ridiculous that this kid applied to 20, taking away a spot and basically wait-listing another kid,” Fraser said.

Brown said he contacted the Fox station, spoke with a producer and then conducted a 10-minute interview with Morris. However, he said he would not give his permission for it to be aired unless she gave him a public apology, which he said she has not done. As of now, Mr. Brown is focused on his future.

We at the Evolving Man Project wish Mr. Brown much-continued success, and we’re looking forward what greatness he attains in the future. Michael Brown is truly #BlackBoyJoy. Today we honor Michael Brown has our Evolved Man of the Week.
