Welcome to the Evolving Man Project’s ‘Evolved Man of the Week’ profiles. Each week we will highlight an individual that embodies what it means to be an evolved man, famous and non-famous men alike. The world needs to know their stories and deeds. This week’s honor goes to Texas singer, actor, dancer, director, drag queen, choreographer, songwriter, and prominent YouTuber, Todrick Hall.
He first gained attention on the ninth season of American Idol, where he made it to the semi-finals. He then became known as a YouTube personality and judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. He has released several albums and also appeared on television and on tour. From 2016 to 2017, Hall starred as Lola in Kinky Boots on Broadway. Later in 2017, he began appearances as Billy Flynn in Chicago on Broadway.
Todrick Hall was born in Plainview, Texas, on April 4, 1985. His family consists of his mother, father, one brother, and a stepfather. Hall began studying ballet at nine-years-old, and later worked with Fantasia in The Color Purple
Todrick Hall first came to national attention by appearing on American Idol. Since then, Hall rose to YouTube fame with almost 3 million subscribers in 2018. Thanks to his web series Pop Star High. Hall first visual album Straight Outta Oz has gained critical praise and spawned a world tour. Hall recently followed-up his album with the new visual album Forbidden.
Here is Todrick Hall in his own words about his struggles for perfection in his artistry, race, and sexuality:
“I don’t like to be that person that just blows the victim horn all the time, but when you’re a gay black man in this industry, there are a lot of people who don’t understand how difficult it is and how much you have to be on it…My show cannot start late. Everything has to be on–the lighting, the sound–because I feel people are waiting for a moment for you to mess up. It’s so difficult to even get the fan base that I have, so I always want to treat them like the No. 1 priority and make sure that every time I put out something, it’s the best version.”
Todrick has broken down barriers and continues to shatter stereotypes. He is true #BlackBoyJoy. Today we honor Todrick Hall has our Evolved Man of the Week.
