Joshua Tree National Park closes because of damage caused by shutdown


The National Park Service announced Tuesday that it would temporarily close Joshua Tree National Park in California beginning Thursday because of dangerous conditions and damage to the land caused by the government shutdown.

The UN says a Saudi teen who fled her male guardians is a refugee


Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun is currently under the protection of UN officials in Thailand, after she was detained in Bangkok airport while on a layover from Kuwait to Australia on Monday (Jan. 7), where her passport was confiscated by Saudi and Kuwaiti officials. Canberra said that she would have to go through the usual background checks before being granted a humanitarian visa.

Physics explains why time passes faster as you age


There’s an inversely proportional relationship between stimuli processing and the sense of time speeding by, Bejan says. So, when you are young and experiencing lots of new stimuli—everything is new—time actually seems to be passing more slowly. As you get older, the production of mental images slows, giving the sense that time passes more rapidly.
