The Lesson from Chile: Dismiss Voters at Your Own Peril

Chile 2

Chileans won’t all be 100% happy with the result. Our great challenge is to form a new social contract through consensus, taking into account both the progress we have achieved with our young democracy, and its demands for greater social justice and equality.

Studies by the Congressional Research Service show that 14 percent of accidental deaths unrelated to a Secretary of Defense-designated military operation were related to substance abuse. The lingering pain of their various injuries on top of the stress of returning from war is what often leads veterans to opioids. After all, studies have found that 44 percent of veterans who go to war return home with chronic pain and between 11 percent and 20 percent of veterans who served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan returned home with PTSD. Often, veterans come home with a combination of both.

Did we evolve to see reality as it exists? No, says cognitive psychologist Donald Hoffman.

Hoffman calls this view “conscious realism.” If proven correct, he argues it could make headway on such intractable quandaries like the mind-body problem, the odd nature of the quantum world, and the much sought-after “theory of everything.”

“Reality may never seem the same again,” Hoffman writes.
