Welcome to the Evolving Man Project’s “Evolved Man of the Week” profile. Each week we will highlight an individual that embodies what it means to be an evolved person, famous and non-famous individual alike. The world needs to know their stories and deeds. This week’s honor goes to the trucker driver and good Samaritan, Efrain Zepeda.
Efrain Zepeda became a hero when he rescued a utility worker trapped in a raised bucket truck, which had caught fire below. With just minutes to spare before the truck exploded, a police officer ran over to a tractor-trailer that was stopped at a nearby intersection. The driver, Efrain Zepeda, sprang into action, moving his trailer beneath the Santa Rosa, California utility worker, without care for his own safety, to provide the man with a means of escape. Amidst plumes of black smoke and flames, the worker was able to jump down onto the truck and evade serious injury or death. Once he was safely on the top, Efrain pulled away to get the worker to safety. Just as he did, that utility vehicle in flames blew up.
The Sonoma County Professional Firefighters Union posted a video on their Facebook page with the comment: “Our citizens never cease to amaze us.” That video showed a utility worker in a raised bucket with his vehicle below him on fire. He had no way of getting down out of the bucket without going into that fire.
“It is nothing short of a miracle that our driver, Efrain, was there just as this individual needed rescue from such a dire situation. Enough can’t be said about his bravery and immediate actions that allowed the worker to escape,”
Webb Estes, the company’s vice president of process improvement.
Thanks to Efrain’s quick actions and fast thinking a person’s life was saved. Showing that despite our cynical and polarized corporate news cycles that sow division amongst our fellow citizens; the reality is much more complicated. Regular people are doing good and heroic deeds daily, like Efrain Zepeda. Today we honor Efrain Zepeda as our Evolved Man of the Week.
