World reaction to Israel’s continuing attacks in Gaza

“We call on the international community to condemn such barbaric actions and targeting of journalists and we demand an immediate international action to hold Israel accountable for its deliberate targeting of journalists and the media institutions,” Dr Mostefa Souag, acting director general of Al Jazeera Media Network, said in a statement.

Biden keeps to ‘quiet diplomacy’ as calls for Israel-Hamas cease-fire ramp up

On Sunday, 29 Democratic senators — including Bernie Sanders of Vermont — signed a letter backing an “immediate ceasefire.” The next day, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also called for a ceasefire, and after the White House said Biden had expressed support for one, on Tuesday House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi followed suit.

Rio de Janeiro: at least 25 killed in city’s deadliest police raid on favela

Built on the hill sides of Rio de Janeiro the shanty town of Rocinha also called “favela da Rocinha” is considered the largest in South America. Illegal constructions on city land has been expanding to the very top of the hills. Recently legalized this town located near the district of São Conrado in Rio de Janeiro is the home of poor segment of the local society. Violence is high due the war between drug cartels and dealers living on premises. Nevertheless tours are organized for foreign tourists to visit this colorful place.

Thursday’s raid, which police said was to prevent children and teenagers being lured into crime, took place despite a supreme court order last June outlawing such incursions during the coronavirus pandemic. The number of police operations in the favelas fell dramatically after that decision but has been increasing again since last October. Recently released figures show police killed 797 people in Rio state between June last year and March, the overwhelming majority in or around the capital.
