Welcome to the Evolving Man Project’s ‘Evolved “Little” Man of the Week’ profiles. This week we will highlight an individual that embodies what it means to be an evolved young boy on their path towards manhood, famous and non-famous alike. The world needs to know their stories and deeds. This week’s honor goes to Sacramento native, second grader, and 7-year-old hero Massiah Browne.
Massiah Browne was swimming at his family’s apartment complex when he noticed the little boy at the bottom of the pool. He knew something was wrong and sprang into action, diving in to save the boy.
Massiah said the boy, who was not known to him, was on the bottom of the pool with his eyes and mouth open and that he dove down into the 6 feet of water and pulled him by his arm to the surface.
One of Massiah’s relatives, a 9-year-old girl named Savannah, helped him pull the boy to the pool deck, where adults came to help and start lifesaving measures.
Here is Massiah Browne in his own words:
“I was just playing in the pool, and then I saw a boy at the bottom of the pool,”…” “And I went to go get him.”
Massiah’s mom, Tiara Delvalle, rushed to the pool after being told of the incident. She has been in touch with the toddler’s mother and says that he is recovering, adding, “It’s a miracle.”
Massiah’s dad, Marcus Browne is a championship boxer who competed in the 2012 Olympic Games; he said he was shocked when he heard about his son’s heroic deed.
“I just couldn’t believe it,” Browne said of his son, who, according to ABC News, also goes by his superhero nickname, “Siah Fire.” “He’s a good kid.”
In the U.S., drowning is the leading cause of death for kids between the ages of 1 and 4 and the second leading cause of death for kids up to age 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A report released last year by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that male toddlers and teenage boys are the most at risk of drowning.
Massiah Browne proves heroes come in all ages. We at the Evolving Man Project wish Massiah continued success. Maybe one day, he’ll be a lifeguard or firefighter rescuing cats from trees or saving people from burning buildings. Or something entirely different; the sky’s the limit. Today we honor Massiah Browne as our Evolved “Little” Man of the Week.
