Dear Johnny, Leave Mrs. Coretta Scott King Alone

Johnathan Majors’s rise to fame was seemingly overnight. My man was getting his bag. The 34-year-old was tapped as the future of Hollywood and had a seemingly long career ahead of him. From indie hit Last Black Man in San Francisco to HBO’s sleeper hit Lovecraft Country to Creed III to being tapped to be the next big bad of the confusing but wildly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Five. The man who played Kang the Conqueror was poised to conquer Hollywood.

In March 2023, news spread that the Hollywood star was involved in a domestic dispute. Since then, it’s come up that there have been abuse allegations from his former girlfriend. Other women from the actor’s past have alleged claims of emotional and physical abuse, too. Majors was sentenced in December of 2023, found guilty of assault and harassment of his ex, and subsequently dropped from his upcoming Hollywood productions, including Disney. Domestic violence isn’t a laughing matter or something to be taken lightly. If you or someone you know are in an abusive relationship with a romantic partner. If it’s safe, please seek help and get away from that abusive partner as soon as possible. The unfortunate reality is that situations of domestic violence don’t end well for women who are the victims of abuse. This isn’t to say that men don’t face violence in intimate relationships, but the statistics speak for themselves.

“While the vast majority of homicide victims are men, women continue to pay the highest price as a result of gender inequality, discrimination, and negative stereotypes. They are also the most likely to be killed by intimate partners and family,” UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov said.

It’s not a good look for the rising star. Unfortunately, my man Johnathan isn’t quite right. And I ain’t talking about him doing the Zoolander Blue Steel pose for every photo when he’s in on the red carpet. For one, there’s a history of abuse claimed by multiple romantic partners in his past. Second, he’s obsessed with the Civil Rights icon and wife of Dr. King, Coretta Scott King. He demanded his then-white girlfriend she needed to be like Michelle Obama and Coretta Scott King. That’s an unrealistic standard for anybody to be compared to as a person. Plus, this white woman could never be Mrs. Obama or Mrs. King because these are two black women. His ex girlfriend was white, and she’d never know the experience of being a black woman is because she wasn’t a black woman. It’s absurd to compare any romantic partner to a notable historical figure. I wouldn’t date a woman for long if she told me I must be like Malcolm X or Nelson Mandela anytime I disappointed her. It’s ludicrous, and I ain’t talking about the famous Atlanta rapper.

I hope Jonathan doesn’t think he’s the new Dr. King. That would be weird. But if you heard his “Great Man” monologue to his former girlfriend, Jonathan Majors has a high opinion of himself, or he’s delusional. He says he’s doing this (acting) for his people and the world. I didn’t know Kang the Conquerer was for the streets?

In his January 2024 Good Morning America interview. He said that his new boo, the actress Megan Good, is holding him down like one legendary Civil Rights figure. Take one wild guess? “Coretta Scott King!” Now you have folks on Instagram and Twitter trolling Megan Good by calling her Mrs. King or Coretta. Y’all need to leave Megan alone. I don’t know Megan personally, and she’s probably lovely. But both Megan and Johnathan are Hollywood actors. Not iconic Civil Rights leaders. Now, both Major and Megan are very successful actors, but they are actors, not freedom fighters, no matter how often Jonathan compares his girlfriends to Coretta Scott King

His strange fixation with Coretta Scott King even garnered a clapback from the civil rights icon’s daughter, Bernice King. She said, “My mother wasn’t a prop.” I’m sure Dr. King is rolling over in his grave, and if he was alive would probably quote another embattled actor, Will Smith: “Keep my wife’s Name outta ya fucking mouth, Johnny!”

I’m playing around with the last statement. MLK was a gentleman, a scholar, and a man of the people. I don’t know what Mrs. King or Dr. King would think about this situation. I can’t speak for people who are no longer with us. But I’m sure they’d want nothing to do with Jonathan’s foolishness and probably advise the brotha to get his act together.

All jokes aside, I hope that the actor Johnathan Majors gets the professional help he needs to deal with whatever issues he has and learns to treat his current and future partners more respectfully. Finally, stop demanding them to be like legendary black women in history. It’s a ridiculous notion of the strong black women trope. In reality, Coretta Scott King was a complete person with ups and downs who, along with her iconic husband, etched their names in history. She was so much more than MLK’s ride-or-die chick. She was a human with flaws like the rest of us. No woman will ever meet Jonathan Majors’ expectations for now due to his misinterpretation of history and lack of self-awareness.
