Welcome to the Evolving Folks Project’s “Evolved Woman of the Week” profile. This feature showcases individuals, both famous and non-famous, who truly embody what it means to be an evolved person. Their stories and deeds deserve to be shared with the world. Today, the honor goes to Dawn Staley—one of the most accomplished figures in basketball history.
We can understand Dawn Staley’s success by examining her early life. She was born in Philadelphia on May 4, 1970, and attended the University of Virginia, where she played college basketball, earning National Player of the Year honors twice. As a Hall of Fame point guard, she won three Olympic gold medals in 1996, 2000, and 2004, and the league selected her as a WNBA All-Star five times. She entered the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012 and later entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
In 2000, she began her coaching journey at Temple University, directing the team to several NCAA tournaments during her active WNBA playing career. Staley has served as the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks since 2008. Under her leadership, the team secured three NCAA National Championships in 2017 and 2022 and completed an undefeated season in 2024. She has made more money than any other coach in the history of women’s college basketball. The South Carolina Gamecocks are now a national powerhouse thanks to Staley’s efforts.
Staley has spoken out about the gender pay gap in sports and increasing opportunities for Black women coaches. In 2025, she released her memoir, Uncommon Favor: Basketball, North Philly, My Mother and Life Lessons I Learned from All Three.
Dawn Staley’s influence extends beyond her role as a coach. Her success in developing WNBA talent secures her legacy as an exceptional coach, alongside A’ja Wilson and Aliyah Boston, and a flawless season. Today, we honor Coach Dawn Staley as our Evolved Woman of the Week.
