Farewell 2020!
Last year, I reflected on the decade where I was fortunate enough to make 30 plus trips around the sun. One year into the new decade, and I’m looking at the BIG 4-0! If I’m lucky to see 2023! Unfortunately, three hundred thousand plus of my fellow U.S. citizens have perished due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic and won’t see the new year. As a vaccine looms, the U.S. government continues its piss poor efforts to protect its citizens and uphold their end of the social contract. More families will suffer from losing loved ones. On top of that, millions have lost their jobs, businesses, and many more of my fellow citizens will face hunger and eviction. (USA #1, right?)
This summer, we saw a massive uprising in the name of justice and positive social change. That movement will continue well into the new year. No matter who is in the White House come January 20th. Much work will still have to been done even if the brunch brigade goes back to sleep. This is a year where I hope that people realize what’s important to them and how fragile life can be for all of us. In this new decade, I hope we can take better care of ourselves, the planet, and those other creatures we share this pale blue dot with.
As the pandemic enters year two, many of my fellow citizens have survived or gone on about life as if everything is fine. For those fortunate enough to have food in our fridges and a roof over our heads, we still need to fight for those who don’t. And this shit show of a year in the United States and the rest of the West can’t be blamed on the Chinese. No matter what racist crap Trump or the rest of the sociopathic elites running the government utter about China screwing us over. That country has gone back to its new normal. We are still debating in some circles to wear a mask or if COVID is a hoax. But, the people still have work to do, and it starts with looking out for our fellow citizens who aren’t as fortunate during these lean times. The year has been bittersweet. (RIP Kobe, Black Panther, and John Lewis!)
On a personal note, this year has been filled with much anxiety, sleepless nights, and sorrow. On the other hand, I’ve accomplished a lot despite the world going mad. I’ve earned my social work license, spoke as an expert on veterans and mental health, rediscovered my love of video games, and published my first novel (co-written by the lovely Berneta Haynes). Shameless plug, the book hits stores on January 1st! The Evolving Men Project has had it’s best year ever! We’ve had guest authors, and I’ve finally started my damn podcast five years after the site launched. Because we all know the world needs another goddamn podcast. Well, I say Question Culture is damn funny, and shout-out to my co-host Brian! So listen to mine instead of Joe Rogan’s. Or both. Or whatever you want to do.
A new year comes upon us, and I will continue to use this small platform and my position of privilege to advocate for those who were suffering the most—those who don’t have a voice. Because I was once one of those people cast away by society, I got lucky and had a little bit of help from friends and family through the years. Plus, lots of counseling and beer too! The Evolving Man Project will continue to speak truth to power and support those fighting to make sure another world is possible. I want to say thank you to all those who read or listened to what I or other co-contributors had to say on this website. No, really, thank you, because I had no idea how this would go when I started. I’m aiming for more global solidarity in 2021! So, happy fucking new years, y’all!
